If you happen to be reading this page, I assume one of three things has happened: 1. you typed your original destination incorrectly, 2. you clicked on a link from one of my social media accounts accidentally or 3. you actually, purposefully searched for this blog :O.
Well… Whether you stumbled on this page 😦 , or had the intent of seeing what this is all about, I’m grateful.
Welcome to the blacademic blog.
This is a diary of my life as a young, black british person of caribbean descent. Here you’ll read about me trying to navigate my way through a challenging PhD, my struggles as a young 20 something, getting used to adulting (yes it is a thing) and general lessons that I learn along the way, surviving and living in London’s concrete jungle.

This isn’t a place where I give answers and claim to have everything figured out – in reality very few people do…
However, I hope to give you an insight into my world, my thoughts and my dreams with the aim of making them a reality. We all have stories to tell and the action of documenting these stories is not only therapeutic – at least to me anyway, but can ensure that those who follow our example don’t have to make the same mistakes and can build much higher and go much further, on the foundations we have set.
Making the transition from a teenager to a young adult is never easy and the added pressure of social media and an ever connected society where we have an overload of information (not always good) makes those pressures much more prevalent.
Very few people who look like me and have shared my experiences do what I do now, which can be exciting but equally frightening as there is no blueprint to follow. That also means that I have a responsibility to set the path and light the way to those coming up behind me.
Thus, if I cannot see the change I want in the world, it is up to me to be it instead.
I hope that this blog will be the beginning of this changes by setting up a transparent discourse that inspires others to strive for more and venture into new areas. I won’t allow the fact that I am afro-caribbean, pigeon hole me into a specific profession or way of life and want to show that whatever you put your mind, energies and passions into becoming, – with the right dedication and hardwork, they can come to fruition.
I know my voice will be a very unique one and my perspective on things may be very different, but hey, if you read this far – hopefully I’ve convinced you enough to regularly check in and share in the journey.

Maybe I should end with a cliche inspirational quote. Hmm.
Bun it…
